    Britain declares war on Iceland

Having previously fought three "Cod wars" in the 1970's, Britain and Iceland have gone to war over British savings deposits in failed Icelandic banks.

The British Prime Minister, Gordon Brown, has publicly declared Icelandic actions to be "effectively illegal" and "unacceptable" and the Icelandic Prime Minister, Gier Haarde, has expressed his annoyance that the UK used anti-terrorism legislation to seize assets in Britain of the one of the Icelandic banks.

Captain Darling has sent an expeditionary force consisting of a delegation of Treasury officials, to Iceland to demand that £1bn in funds invested by councils and other public bodies in collapsed Icelandic banks be recovered quickly.

The Iron Chancellor Mr Brown said he would do "everything in his power" to see money was secured.

I can just see Captain Darling and the Iron Chancellor mobilising the Home Guard of Silver Surfers, mouse in hand, to fight them on the beaches to reclaim their lost savings!!!

Personally I think Gordon Brown was perfectly within his rights to freeze the Icelandic Bank assets in this country, given they have no intention whatsoever of paying back UK savers' deposits. Why should the British taxpayer foot the bill for the woeful mismanagement of the Icelandic economy and Banking system?

For once Gordon Brown and Alistair Darling seem to have a bit of backbone about them and are showing some real leadership.

I agree great idea can't wait to get my £30K back and help the UK banks by investing in their somewhat disappointing interest rate accounts. My fallback position being to relieve Debenhams of £30k worth of clothing etc and telling them to send the bill to the Icelandic Prime Minister - thats the wedding clothes sorted!

Shame though that IceSave the deposit bank could not have been sold to another bank like B & B, as I do really hate filling out forms and if one of the accounts was joint does that mean two forms?

Note for Capt Darling - my daughter's wedding is October 9th next year and I need my money back well before the date - bills to pay you know!
