What are 0% purchase rate credit cards?

If you want to make a big purchase (or several purchases) and you don’t have the money upfront, a purchase credit card is a very flexible way of buying now and paying later.

Any purchases you make are not charged interest for an initial period. This means that (providing you repay the balance in full before the introductory period ends) you can borrow money far more cheaply than with a personal loan – indeed some people use their credit card in this way even if they have enough money saved to make their purchase(s). By keeping money in a savings account, you can actually earn money for borrowing!

Serial spenders beware!

A 0% purchase rate credit card can be carte blanche for a serial spender. When making purchases think about how you will repay them, set yourself your own ‘credit limit’ (this should be an amount that you can afford to repay within the introductory period – you may well find that this differs considerably to the credit limit that your card provider offers you) and make your own repayment plan – you may be able to set up a Standing Order for a fixed amount, or (more rarely) sometimes a Direct Debit for a fixed percentage of the balance to help with this.

No cash advance warning!

Avoid using your credit card to withdraw cash and then make purchases. This is because the 0% deal is only applicable to purchases made in a shop, by directly using the card.

If you withdraw cash to pay, not only do you not benefit from the 0% deal, providers will usually reserve their highest interest rates for “cash advances”, as well as charging a fee (usually around the greater of 3% or £3). You will also normally be charged interest on cash you withdraw from day one, as opposed to purchases which normally have a grace period of up to two months!

It doesn’t end there though; by withdrawing cash using your credit card you also don’t get the purchase protection afforded by the Consumer Credit Act. This protects any purchases you make using your credit card (for purchases of between £100 and £30,000 in value), as your bank becomes equally liable in the event that they’re not delivered, or that they’re delivered with a fault.
