What are Foreign Usage Credit Cards?

When you use your credit card abroad, you are likely to be charged a fee when you make a purchase and an additional fee to withdraw cash. However, some credit cards specialise in not charging, or charge a reduced ‘Foreign Usage Fee’ for purchases made abroad, and some also don’t charge you for ATM withdrawals either.

A Foreign Usage Credit Card, therefore, is particularly good if you are a regular traveller, or for holiday spending.  However, it’s easy to get carried away in the exuberance of a holiday – so be very wary of withdrawing cash at an ATM.

A Foreign Usage Credit Card may not charge you a fee for withdrawing cash, but may charge you a much higher rate of interest than if you made a purchase directly on the card. As well as this, you may be charged interest sooner for any cash withdrawals you make on the card, as opposed to making a purchase.
