Compare the best prepaid travel cards

Our travel money card selection is ordered by lowest transaction fee, lowest ATM charge, then reload options.

Prepaid cards allow you to pre-load them with money you already have. This means that you can’t get into debt with them – you can only ever spend what you’ve put on the card.

The big advantage of a prepaid travel card over cash is that if you lose the card you can get it replaced – with your money still on there. If you lose cash on holiday or are robbed, you are unlikely to get this back from your travel insurer.

You can choose one of 3 currencies to have your prepaid travel cards in:

  • Euro € Currency card
  • Dollar $ Currency card
  • Sterling £ Currency card

Keep an eye on the transaction and foreign exchange fees – preferably you should look for a card where these are nil.

Some currency prepaid cards also make a charge for withdrawing money at an ATM. If you’re planning to access your cash at a hole-in-the-wall (rather than using your card to make purchases) you should try to find a card that doesn’t make ATM charges.

You may be able to “top-up” your card using a variety of methods. Consider how you might want to do this, bearing in mind that you may be out of the country when you want to transfer money from your bank account to the prepaid card.
