What is a premier/black credit card?

How exactly do these credit cards differ from other cards? The answer is that they’re more exclusive – generally they’re aimed at higher earners.

Because they are aimed at a more restricted audience, a premier/black credit card can offer a higher credit limit than other credit cards (although this will depend on your income and credit score). They may also offer a range of benefits such as the ability to collect Air Miles for spending on the card.

Why are the APRs so high?

It’s not uncommon for a premier or black credit card to have an APR that is far more expensive than a normal card. This is because premium credit cards tend to charge an annual fee – and annual fees have to be included as part of the card’s APR.

Is a premier/black credit card right for you?

Most of us wouldn’t be accepted for a premier or black credit card. As previously mentioned, they are targeted at higher earners. Some cards are invitation-only.

Premium credit cards can be suitable for higher earners who need a larger credit limit and/or make full use of the benefits package the card offers. However, even for some higher earning customers a black credit card may not be suitable. You may for instance, find better benefits with a rewards or cashback credit card – without having to pay an annual fee.

Don’t be encouraged to rack up a big balance on a premier/black credit card. If you’re trying to repay debt, a long 0% balance transfer card remains your best bet – even if it’s a standard credit card.

Premier or black credit cards can offer competitive reward schemes – but remember that you may only get some of the rewards if you spend a substantial amount using the credit card.

As with any rewards or cashback card, the only way this can work out cost effectively is to repay the balance in full each month. If you don’t any rewards or benefits you receive will soon be eroded by the interest and fees you have to pay.
