From early next year both new and existing customers of Barclays will be able to visit a bank branch within their local Asda supermarket.
In February the bank is set to open four branches in Birchwood (Cheshire), Pudsey (West Yorkshire), North Watford (Hertfordshire) and Broadstairs (East Kent) – that will all be located within each town's respective Asda supermarket.
The bank says that by doing this it hopes to make everyday banking a more convenient experience. It also says that having a branch within a supermarket will help accessibility, as customers will be able to use the store's vast parking space.
Barclays staff will work at the new Asda-based branches during traditional bank hours, with cash and cheque machines accessible during the supermarket's opening times.
The bank is planning on opening another four branches within Asda later in 2014, but has not yet decided in which locations these will be in.
Commenting, Steve Cooper, head of Barclays Retail and Business Bank, said: "We've spoken to our customers who use our everyday and business banking services in our branches and they've told us their time is precious so would benefit from being able to multi-task, park easily and visit branches with longer opening hours.
"This partnership with Asda means they can do their food shop and bank at the same time, with the opportunity for a new flexible banking experience in a way that's most convenient for our customers."
