Alliance and Leicester has thrown down the gauntlet to the rest of the current account market with its online Premier Direct Current Account.

The account pays 6.5% fixed for one year on balances up to £2,500. At the end of the year, the rate reverts to Bank of England base rate less 1%. To open the account, you must agree to pay a minimum of £500 per month.
