Many of us could do with saving a bit of extra cash at this time of year, and looking at your utility bills could be a great way to do that. After all, research from Cable.co.uk shows that it's possible to save as much as £300 every single year simply by switching broadband provider, so why not give it a go?

Granted, it may not help you cover this year's festive shop, but if you saved up that extra cash, you could have a healthy savings pot by this time next year that could go a long way to covering the festivities. It's a quick and simple process, too, starting with comparing the top deals in your area.

Unfortunately, few people seem to be taking advantage of this easy way to save some money, with a survey from Cable.co.uk finding that more than half of respondents haven't changed broadband supplier in the last five years, while 42% have never switched. But why? Well, some put it down to brand loyalty, while others just don't have the time – or inclination – to make it happen.

Most seem to be reluctant to switch away from what they know, too, with the majority of respondents sticking with the big four providers – BT, Sky, TalkTalk and Virgin Media – yet there could be some huge savings to be made by switching to lesser-known names.

"Christmas is a time for giving, so surely it's about time people started giving themselves some extra cash in their pockets to spend on their loved ones,"commented Stavros Tsolakis, broadband expert and CEO of Direct Save Telecom. "It's staggering to think that 42% of British households have never switched broadband provider.

"People may call it brand loyalty; I simply call it madness as they are merely chucking away hundreds of pounds every year. If someone has not changed their broadband provider in the last five years, which is more than half of us, I can guarantee they are paying far too much for their broadband."

The savings could be marked, too: the survey found that broadband customers could save around £300 a year by switching their broadband deal, and perhaps unsurprisingly, three-quarters would take up a new broadband deal right now in return for £300, and more than a third of those questioned said they would put the money they saved towards having a better Christmas next year. So, with such savings to be made, what are you waiting for?

Dan Howdle, director of Communications at Cable.co.uk, concluded: "To those who would spend the savings on a better Christmas next year, I offer this advice: Switch your broadband deal now and start putting what you save to one side. Almost everyone who is not within the minimum term of their contract can switch and save, and doing so is both seamless and easier than it's ever been."
