E.ON confirms gas and electricity price hikes

E.ON confirms gas and electricity price hikes

E.ON has become the fifth of the six major energy suppliers to increase its prices this winter.

Customers at E.ON will endure a 9% rise in electricity prices, while gas prices are increasing by 3%.

The move means that all six of the largest gas and electricity providers in the UK have now shown their hand with respect to pricing this winter.

Along with E.ON's price rises, British Gas has increased its gas and electricity prices by 7%, and Scottish and Southern Energy has raised gas prices by 9.4%. Scottish Power has increased prices by 2% on gas and 8.9% on electricity, and npower has increased prices by 5.1% on gas and electricity.

EDF is the only energy supplier to have committed to freezing their prices over the period of higher winter consumption.

"E.ON's customers will, sadly, not be shocked that it has followed in the footsteps of other suppliers' price increases," said Richard Hall, energy expert at Consumer Focus.

"However, the fact that these rises aren't unexpected won't make it any easier for cash-strapped consumers to afford their higher bills.

Ofgem, the energy sector's regulator, is currently in the process of reviewing the domestic energy market and investigating the prices households are being charged.

The review is due to be completed in March 2011.

"Consumers simply don't trust that suppliers are asking them to pay a fair price for their energy," added Richard Hall.

"With high prices, a complex market, and consumers being asked to pay billions of pounds to improve our energy supply, it is essential that confidence in energy prices is improved.

"Ofgem's review of the market needs to meet these high expectations."
