Many consumers already use comparison sites to try and get the best deals when it comes to energy, but in new plans, getting a first-rate tariff could become even easier.

Quick Response (QR) codes are the latest initiative outlined by the Government to help people get a clearer grasp on their energy consumption and tariffs.

These codes will be included on your bills and with the use of a smartphone or tablet, you will be able to scan the code and instantly see details, such as your energy consumption and the name of your tariff.

This data will be seamlessly transferred to your device, enabling you to use it on price comparison websites to get a cross-market comparison and see if you can get a better deal.

With household gas and electricity prices and tariffs often rising, some of us just accept it as an inevitable factor of inflation. But, if we are made more aware of the market, it is hoped we will be more hands-on when it comes to searching out a better deal. The information being available at consumers' fingertips should make them more aware about their energy use and more inclined to check whether they are getting good value for money.

It was hoped that the energy sector would voluntarily introduce these codes but, despite evidence that they would be helpful for customers, energy companies have not been proactive. Therefore, the Government has decided to take action under the Energy Act to modify energy company licences to have the codes introduced as part of energy bills.

QR codes are the latest addition to the Government's bid to help consumers make the switch to get a better deal, with collective switching and simpler tariffs already being introduced. With around a quarter of a million customers already switching every month, this latest move should add even more transparency to the market.

Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change, Edward Davey, said: "Consumers now have a real choice with the number of small energy suppliers doubling since 2010. By opening up the energy market and the steps we are taking to make switching easy, we have already seen more than 1.5million people make the switch in the last quarter alone.

"With so many of us using smart phones and tablets nowadays it would be strange if we weren't using the latest technology to help us save money at home."

Vulnerable users, and those that don't use smartphones, are also hoped to be able to benefit from the new QR codes as family and friends are expected to help them use the new technology.
