Households are ten times more likely to be burgled in November than at any other time of the year, according to research by the over 50s insurance provider RIAS.

RIAS's analysis of claims from half a million home insurance customers revealed that burglars are more inclined to target homes as the long, dark winter nights set in.

In fact, since November last year there has been a 10% rise in the number of burglaries, with Bradford, London, Manchester and Leeds topping the list of Britain's most-burgled cities.

Additionally, five bedroom houses are three times more likely to be robbed than one bedroom properties, with claims costing 127% more, while back doors and windows are the most common points of entry.

Burglaries are also costing households dearly, with the average cost of a robbery now hitting £2,433 and rising to £2,474 in November as Britons begin to fill their houses with valuables ahead of the Christmas season.

"As the nights get darker over winter homeowners need to pay attention to their security practices," commented Peter Corfield, managing director at RIAS.

"Our analysis is particularly worrying for the UK's over 50s, some of whom are living in larger family homes and may have worked hard for many years to build up irreplaceable personal possessions."
