The festival season is upon us, but while you may be excitedly planning your festival look and making sure you've got the right waterproofs and camping gear, one thing you may not have considered is insurance. This could be a big mistake, with research from Halifax warning that UK festival goers are risking hundreds of pounds worth of valuables by failing to be covered when outside the home.

The figures show that festival goers take an average of £268 worth of items with them to festivals, an increase of £81 from last year, with 31% carrying more than £300 worth of belongings. You just need to think of how much your phone is worth to see how quickly the value can ramp up, not to mention the amount of cash you'll need, and that's before we even get to things like clothes, pricey sunglasses and expensive bags.

Indeed, smartphones now rank as the second most popular item carried around at festivals, second only to purses and wallets, but is your gadget covered? More than a quarter of those surveyed admitted that they have no insurance cover whatsoever for their pricey pieces of kit, and 29% don't know whether their valuables are protected outside of the home.

Martyn Foulds, senior claims manager at Halifax Insurance, explains why this can be such a problem: "Large crowds at concerts and festivals can be a haven for pick pockets, as people are in a relaxed atmosphere and may have their guard down. It's important people check they are adequately insured for belongings outside the home to avoid putting a dampener on any festivities."

This could be as simple as checking your policy documents, or if you want further confirmation, it'll be worth calling your provider to check that you're completely covered. If your valuables aren't protected outside of the home, it'll definitely be worth seeing if you can include this level of cover, but if this isn't an option – or if the cost makes it prohibitive – why not see if you can get the right protection elsewhere?

It's important to get the level of cover you need at a price you can afford, and while you should never scrimp on insurance, it's important to make sure you're getting the best value possible.
