Insurance companies are bracing themselves for a high level of claims over the next few weeks as snow and freezing weather make way for milder temperatures and stormy conditions.
Providers have warned households that the 'big thaw' combined with heavy rain and high winds could spell severe flooding and structural damage to millions of homes across the UK.
Claims for burst water pipes have increased considerably as a result of the cold snap, which saw temperatures plunge to around -10 degrees.
A number of insurers have advised policy-holders to review their cover and contact them if they have any concerns.
Others have issued tips and advice on what to do in the event of adverse weather conditions, such as taking photographs of all damaged areas to assist with a claim and using a plastic sheet to temporarily repair damaged roofs.
It is also important to remember that a home insurance policy is not classed as a maintenance policy and most insurance companies expect a home to be in reasonable condition, with wear and tear not covered.
Fences and gates that have been blown down by high winds are also generally excluded.
