Insurance may not be the first thing you think about when organising your daily commute, but considering how much the typical London commuter carries with them, it could pay to make sure you're covered.

Research from Towergate shows that the typical commuter carries an average of £1,815 in personal possessions on trains to and from work – including laptops, smartphones, jewellery, wallets, bags and office clothes – yet few consider the insurance implications of those items.

What if you lose some of those pricey possessions on your daily commute? After all, 40% of commuters carry a laptop with them on their journey to work and 88% carry a smartphone, with a combined total worth of £632. Then there's the items kept in bags (such as perfumes, makeup and glasses) which tot up to £327, while accessories (including wallets, purses, watches and jewellery) can add another £856 to the commuter total.

It's a significant sum, yet 43% of respondents said they didn't have insurance to cover any of their possessions, despite 15% having lost their wallet while on a journey, 11% losing jewellery, 9% losing their phone and 7% losing laptops.

"It is alarming to think about the combined value of items we carry to and from work each day without a moment's hesitation," said Kirsty Wainwright-Noble from Towergate. "But with many of us using various modes of public transport to get to and from work, there is a risk of valuable items being left behind and ending up in a station's lost property.

"It's crucial that commuters check they have the right cover in place, and if unsure, speak to their insurer about what they are covered against outside of the home; otherwise they could find themselves increasing an already costly commute."

Have you checked your home insurance policy to make sure your items are covered outside the home? If not, get reading that small print! You wouldn't want to assume you're covered only to find out otherwise should you try to make a claim, so double-check the details to get the peace of mind you deserve.
