These days, there's no need to jet off to far-flung destinations in order to enjoy your summer holiday – staycations are proving increasingly popular, with many relishing the chance to get away from it all on home soil. But that doesn't mean you should forget about insurance!

Unfortunately, many people do. Research from Policy Expert shows that, of the 75% of Brits who will be holidaying in the UK this summer, half could be doing so completely uninsured, leaving thousands of pounds' worth of valuables at risk of loss, theft and damage.

Brits uncovered

The study found that 50% don't have away from home cover included in their home insurance policy – despite the fact that they typically take £676 of valuables with them – and just 13% of respondents said they'd take out travel insurance for their staycation. Given that 25% said they opted to holiday in the UK to save money, failing to take out insurance seems counterintuitive, as it could end up costing far more if the worse were to happen.

Indeed, 8% of respondents who'd holidayed in the UK had been victims of theft, loss or damage (mobile phones, cameras, purses/wallets and jewellery were the most common items), yet 31% didn't claim on their insurance. That means many would have had to cover the cost out of their own pocket, making the staycation far less affordable than may have been hoped.

"Many holidaymakers are opting to stay in the UK for a variety of reasons, but whether you're venturing to the other side of the world or to a seaside break on the coast, it's important to ensure you're covered," said Adam Powell, head of Operations at Policy Expert. "A fun family holiday could quickly turn sour if your valuables are stolen, lost or damaged."

At the very least, you'll want to check the small print of your home insurance policy to see if your valuables are covered away from home, but if you want to be confident that you're completely protected, getting travel insurance is vital.

Is travel insurance worth it for a staycation?

In most cases, yes! Standard travel insurance still covers you in the UK, albeit not quite to the same extent – most will only cover you if you've pre-booked accommodation, for example, while some specify that your trip must be for a minimum length of time, and others stipulate that you must be a certain distance away from home.

However, this just reiterates the importance of checking the small print of any insurance quote, and as long as your trip meets the criteria, it'll be well worth it: you'll still get the usual benefits of travel insurance such as cover for loss, theft or damage of items, as well as cancellation cover, which can be just as important in the UK as anywhere else.

It needn't cost a fortune either – you can find single trip policies that'll cover you throughout the UK and Europe from as little as a few pounds, and even an annual policy won't break the bank, so it's certainly worth investigating.

Ultimately, you could be putting your finances at risk if you're not covered, so even if you're staycationing, make sure you've got the right insurance – use our insurance quote tool to get started and find the cover you need.
