We've become a nation of bargain hunters, and with good reason – who doesn't love to save a few pounds here and there? It's a core part of money management and can help keep budgets in check, and the rise of online shopping is only fuelling the bargain-hunting fire.
Research from online marketplace Flubit.com shows that many shoppers will stop at nothing to secure those vital discounts, with 60% of respondents regularly searching for discount codes before they add an item to their virtual shopping cart. Other common methods for bagging a bargain include checking eBay to see if it's cheaper (50%), signing up to a newsletter for a one-off discount (35%), searching money-saving forums (34%), and even sneakily asking a friend or family member to use their student discount (15%).
Others take it even further: 8% said they'd email the company directly to ask for a better offer, while 6% have gone social and visited the company's Facebook page to ask for a discount. A particularly cheeky 4% have even written a letter of complaint in the hope of securing a freebie or future discount.
Many like to spend time carefully researching all the options, too, with the average person spending around two and a half hours a week shopping online – and 34% regularly do so during working hours.
"Today's consumers are extremely savvy when it comes to securing the best prices for products and are unlikely to make a purchase without due diligence," said Flubit spokesperson Tia Saunders. "The rise of online shopping has given customers better choice, placing more power in their hands, while social media has rightly given them a louder voice."
Shoppers truly are becoming savvy, and as the research shows, there are now more opportunities than ever to snap up a bargain. Online shopping and social media means there are plenty of outlets to try, but don't overlook the basics – remember to use every voucher and discount code at your disposal, because in many cases, the old tricks are often still the best.
