There may be nothing more confusing than legal speak, with the small print on most contracts leaving people dizzy and scratching their heads. It's therefore a great relief to find that 64% of pet insurance holders think the small print on their policy is clear.

This finding, from a study by YouGov, has come as welcome news to Aquarium Software, who believes that the pet insurance industry is to be applauded for its efforts, and that technology has a key role to play in getting this figure even closer to 100%.

"This latest YouGov survey really gives the industry something to get its claws into," said Mark Colonnese, Sales and Marketing director of Aquarium Software. "The findings are certainly encouraging." He wonders whether the industry could be further simplified, reiterating the firm's previous calls for a central pet register. "Once implemented, this could be expanded to become a holistic portal linking pets to vets, and to insurers, creating a virtuous circle of well-informed pet parents, healthy pets, comprehensive cover and reducing premiums," he said.

"Technology is already delivering pet insurance cover in a way that is more easily managed and understood. With younger generations embracing technology more than ever and showing no signs of deserting pet ownership, the future is bright both for policyholders and the pet insurance industry.

Always check the small print(s).

It is important for the small print on a pet insurance policy to be clear, as it is for any contract, because this will ensure that owners know exactly what they are getting themselves into. Does it cover your pet for a long-term illness? What about pre-existing conditions? How much would you need to pay out of pocket in the case of an emergency or vital surgery? These are all things that pet owners should ask themselves before signing the dotted line. Now, with technology constantly evolving, there might be new questions that you might want to ask yourself when taking out pet insurance, such as how interlinked you might want your insurer and vet to be, and if your insurer has a simple online procedure for dealing with claims, or even a handy app with local vets and tips to guide you in your life as a pet owner. The more transparency they can give you, the more peace of mind you will have when it comes to the health and happiness of your furriest friend(s). Are you unhappy with your current policy, or are you finding your current terms simply too difficult to understand? Consider using our pet insurance comparison tool to see if you could find a better deal for your pet, and you might be able to benefit your wallet at the same time.
