Britons who are heading abroad have been warned to take care when choosing a travel insurance policy.

According to InsureandGo, good quality cover is essential in order to provide the appropriate level of protection.

Founder of the travel insurance specialist Perry Wilson explained that many people fail to understand the complexity of premiums and the variety of cover that is on offer.

He noted that it is not as straightforward as car insurance, as there are many different kinds on offer.

"You've got accident, personal injury, theft cover, luggage cover and you've got all the medical clauses in there," said Mr Wilson, adding: "You have got to know the policy."

His comments follow InsureandGo findings that providers in the UK received more than 130,000 claims relating to skiing last year, at a total value of £66 million.

Medical-related claims in the area averaged at around £690 - almost £200 more than the typical claim for all categories.
