Everyone loves a bargain, and it seems that a growing number of people will actively try to hunt one down, with research from American Express showing that we truly are a nation of savvy shoppers.

Save £900/year!

The survey found that spending wisely using discounts, rewards and special offers is now truly entrenched into the British psyche, with pretty much all UK shoppers (98%) believing that it's an important part of their shopping habits. It really could pay to be like that, too, as the research went on to reveal that taking a shrewd approach to spending can save the average shopper £899 per year!

There's nothing to stop you from saving more than that, either, as Londoners admitted that they're able to save a whopping £1,040 per year by being a bit savvy with their spending. Furthermore, 35% of respondents said that using rewards and offers will be even more important to them in the year ahead, with 49% using them as a way to cut costs and 39% wanting these kinds of discounts to boost their spending power.

Given that people are taking a seriously proactive approach to smart shopping, who knows how much you could save!

"Our research shows that seeking a saving is now part of the everyday shopping experience," said Nicholas Stefanovitz, vice president of Consumer Cards UK at American Express, "[and] consumers are making significant savings by taking advantage of a wide range of discounts, rewards and special offers".

Get even savvier

So why not get in on the action? There are plenty of ways you can go about it. Looking in the discount sections at supermarkets or heading for the sale rails will probably be the simplest place to start, but what about taking the time to do a bit of research before you hit the shops?

Seeing what kind of vouchers and discount codes are available should be a given – check out our dedicated voucher section to get started – and you may like to sign up to certain retailers' newsletters to be the first to know of any sales.

This could work well for online shopping, too, and in this case, make sure to take advantage of cashback sites – you could get something for nothing! Cashbask credit cards can be another way to profit from your everyday spending, while some regular credit cards have their own reward schemes and special offers, too. The rise of smartphones opens up another realm of possibility as there are plenty of apps out there that can give you great discounts (and even freebies), so be smart, be proactive and see how much you could save.
