Coupon use has been rocketing over the last few years, with savvy shoppers everywhere getting in on the action. After all, who wants to pay full price when you can get a discount?

It's a great way to make the most of you money, and research has shown just how popular it's become.

According to coupon experts Valassis Ltd, 84% of supermarket shoppers now use coupons. Almost a third say they look for promotional offers more than they did a year ago, highlighting how ingrained discount-seeking behaviour is becoming, with just 16% saying they never use coupons – down from 26% a year ago.

And it's paying off. All this couponing activity has meant that over a third of consumers save at least £5 a month, an increase of 10% on last year, and of course, there's nothing to stop you from saving even more.

It's a great marketing tool as well, and with 93% of shoppers saying they'd shop away from their regular supermarket if they spotted better offers elsewhere, retailers are doing everything they can to temp you. So why not take advantage of it?

Charles D'Oyly, managing director at Valassis, commented on the findings: "The supermarket wars continue to be white hot with the battle for consumer spend as fierce as ever.

"Consumers have grown accustomed to discounts, with coupon usage now forming an integral part of the shopping trip, so it's no surprise that we are witnessing record volume redemption rates across a variety of products. Retailers appear to be tapping this trend by creating their own uniquely-issued coupons to drive more traffic into their stores."

As well as supermarkets upping their offers, the rise of technology has arguably added to the popularity of couponing too. What once involved trawling through papers and magazines to cut out the vouchers now becomes a quick flash of the smartphone with the coupon proudly displayed, and with plenty of discount sites you're spoilt for choice. Just print and go!
