About RSS Feeds

What Is An RSS Feed?

An RSS (Really Simple Syndication) feed is a document containing information in a format which can be used by feed readers or other websites.

There are many reasons why RSS feeds have become so popular, but probably the best is because it's unformatted and reusable content. This means that the information made available within RSS feeds can be accessed in a number of ways and reformatted to tie in with the layout of any website.

Where Can I Find An RSS Feed?

RSS feeds are easily identified by the now standard logo, which you will find in a number of pages across this site.

Clicking the RSS button, or the link normally available next to it, will take you to a page containing the information in a format known as XML. This will be your RSS feed.

What Do I Do With An RSS Feed?

As mentioned earlier, RSS feeds can be used in a number of ways and for many different purposes. Probably the easiest and less technical of them all however, is to add your feed to a reader.

The way you add a feed will vary from reader to reader, but in general is just a case of copying the location of your feed into whichever reader you happen to be using.

What Is A Reader?

RSS Readers are simple programs that run on your computer and allow you to add any of the RSS feeds available on this site.

A reader will process the information found within the feeds and highlight new items as they become available, and in many cases you will be able to organise your feeds into folders.

Where Can I Get A Reader From?

There are many companies currently offering RSS readers, some are less expensive than others, some are even free. It really comes down to personal choice and what is suitable for your requirements.

Here are just three of the most popular ones, but doing a search for 'RSS Readers' will bring back an almost endless list of products for you to choose from.
