How we helped David in a medical emergency

David Jukes from the Wirral never expected things to go wrong, but unfortunately just a few days into his holiday in Tenerife he needed a helping hand.

Instead of soaking up the sun and enjoying his holiday, David was hospitalised for 11 days.

As well as covering the cost for his hospital stay and medical fees, we also took care of his wife by paying for emergency accommodation and transport, so she was able to visit David in hospital without worry.

Once David was fit to travel, we arranged new flights and for a specialist nurse to fly home with him. We needed to make sure he got home safe.

Back in good health, David renewed his Avanti Travel Insurance policy for a third year, reassured by the service he received in his moment of plight. Other insurers are sometimes hesitant in covering certain pre-existing medical conditions or impose age restrictions. But we think that celebrating another birthday shouldn’t stop you from travelling.

Avanti Travel Insurance’s Mature Travel Trends report found a 35 per cent rise in over 65s travelling in the past 20 years. Despite the increased risks associated with travelling at an older age, Avanti discovered that 40 per cent of these people wouldn’t take out a travel insurance policy before going on a short break, such as France. David says: “You hope you never have to use it, but by golly it’s a good job you have it when you need it. It’s bad enough when you’re ill at home, but it’s terrible when you’re abroad.”
