first direct has won Current Account Provider of the Year 2021 at the Moneyfacts Consumer Awards held earlier this year. Analysts at Moneyfacts reviewed the current accounts available from financial providers to create a shortlist. These then went forward to a public vote to decide the winners, highly commended and commended brands.


Michele Monck, Head of Digital at Moneyfacts.co.uk, said: “This is the second year that first direct has won this award. It was recognised by its customers for excellent customer service and the competitive rates it offered for those needing to borrow using an overdraft.”

What does the 1st Account from first direct offer?

first direct offers a single bank account called the 1st Account. It offers a £250 interest-free overdraft (subject to status) and access to a 1.00% AER Regular Saver Account. There are no monthly fees and customers can pay in cash and cheques at HSBC branches and the Post Office.
Customers can also benefit from award-winning customer service from people based in the UK, with no machines or overseas call centres. 
Those switching their bank account will also receive a £100 welcome payment. 

How does the first direct £100 switching offer work?

Those wanting to get the £100 incentive will need to use the Current Account Switch Service and pay at least £1,000 within three months of opening the account. To be eligible, applicants must have not already held an account with first direct and/or a HSBC current account on or after 1 January 2018. Current account subject to status and an assessment of your financial circumstances.

How to apply for a 1st Account from first direct

Those wanting to open the 1st Account need to be over 18 and a UK resident. Applicants will need an email address and mobile phone . 
Those who have been bankrupt or registered for an Individual Voluntary Agreement (IVA) within the last six years will not be eligible for this account.
