Whether the superstitious person within is minding every black cat, or it's just any other last day of the working week, today is the inauspicious Friday the 13th. However you feel about it, you may be surprised to find that Brits, on average, do treat this date with caution when it comes to insurance claims.

This is according to Policy Expert, whose claims data has revealed that fewer people make insurance claims on this date, compared to the average day during the month. This is a pattern they've seen on the last nine consecutive Fridays on this date, going all the way back to 2013.

On the most recent Friday 13th, in October 2017, insurance claim costs went down by £69 and in January during the same year, claims fell by £373. Meanwhile, back in March 2015, average claims fell by a whopping £1,238.

This is not entirely surprising, as the insurance provider also discovered that almost a quarter of Brits (23%) believe that walking under a ladder will bring bad luck, along with 21% holding the same belief about broken mirrors and 19% keeping new shoes well away from the table.

Adam Powell, head of operations at Policy Expert, said: "If you're one of the millions of people watching your step this Friday 13th, make sure your home insurance policy is up to date and you've checked the small print to avoid any nasty surprises should you encounter a black cat, smashed mirror or the number 13."
