When do you let yourself have a little treat? Is it to reward yourself after a productive week, to recover from a bad day at the office, or simply to have a little pick-me-up when the weather's a bit depressing? Whatever the reason, we all like to enjoy a bit of self-indulgence every now and then, and has delved a little deeper into the behaviour – and spending habits – of treat-hungry Brits…

The treats tot up

The study found that the typical consumer will spend an average of £143 per month treating themselves, with the majority (75%) admitting that they indulge twice a week. The most popular time for a treat is Saturday afternoon, perhaps when everyone's hitting the high street!

That £143 can quickly add up, too, and by the end of the year, the average Brit will have spent £1,716 on treating themselves. But on what? Well, alcohol appears to be the most popular form of self-indulgence, with 22% relaxing with a glass of wine or trip to the pub after a bad day at work, while 20% do the same after a productive week and 10% choose to reward themselves with a drink after a hard gym session.

Other popular treats include a new DVD (17%), perhaps unsurprising at this time of year, with cosy nights on the sofa being the perfect antidote to the January Blues – and far warmer than a night on the town! If a bad mood is getting you down as well as the weather, 19% opt for a tasty pick-me-up (chocolate being the preferred choice), while boredom sees people reach for the comfort food, too, with 17% admitting that they turn to food-based treats to fill the void.

A spot of retail therapy is on the cards for many people, with 24% hitting the shops when they get paid. Reaching a particular goal also brings out the big spenders, with 39% treating themselves to new clothes or accessories when they've lost weight, and a further 21% head out for dinner if they've passed a test or hit a savings target (for example). Others like to spoil themselves with a lie-in, particularly those who are feeling under the weather (38%), while hot bubble baths also top the treats list – and as an added bonus, this kind of treat doesn't cost anything at all!

Justified spending

Despite the sheer amount spent on many of these treats, the majority see it as justified spending and are content with their indulgences, with just 12% confessing that they feel guilty after splurging. Of the minority who don't treat themselves (13%), almost half (47%) said it's because they're sticking to a savings budget, which shows that many are still being responsible with their spending and savings habits.

Furthermore, the fact that many people reward themselves once they've hit a particular goal highlights how important this kind of motivation can be – agreeing to treat yourself after you've saved a certain amount, for example, can make all those extra spending sacrifices far easier to cope with. Then there are those times when you just need a little pick-me-up, and if you try to opt for cheap or even free treats (a cosy night on the sofa, a bubble bath or a favourite film you haven't watched in ages), it needn't get in the way of your savings habits, either!
