Valentine's Day may be the time to treat that special someone in your life, but what about your four-legged loved ones? It seems that many will be pampering their pets, too, so some partners will have to share the spotlight.

Research from American Express found that 19% of respondents will be treating their furry friends today, spending a combined total of £27m in the process. Partners still take priority, with 56% of respondents planning to treat their other half (to the tune of £27 on average), but pets can still look forward to a £5 treat.

Interestingly, men are more likely to splash the cash on both partners and pets, with 20% planning to do just that, while only 12% of women will do the same. And, it isn't only pets and partners that can look forward to a Valentine's treat, either, as 10% of respondents said they'll be treating a parent (at an average value of £6), while the same proportion will spoil a friend (£5), and 14% will even treat themselves to a little something (£8).

"Britain is a nation of animal lovers and it's great to see we are showing affection to both pets and partners this Valentine's Day," said Jenny Cheung, director at American Express. "Whether you're treating a partner, family member or four-legged companion, putting related expenditure on a card that earns rewards or cashback is one way of ensuring you give your finances some love too."

But why stop there? If you've already got a reward or loyalty card, it could be worth checking the balance to see how many points or cashback you've accrued, as you may be able to redeem them to treat a loved one for free. They need never know you didn't splash out!
