We'd all like to do the best we can for our planet, and it seems that energy customers are going greener than ever as a result, with analysis from energyhelpline and renewable energy firm Pure Planet showing a marked shift from the Big Six in favour of smaller, cleaner and greener suppliers.
The figures show that 1.1 million customers have switched from the Big Six in the past year, with many of those opting for cleaner energy suppliers instead, highlighting that consumers are more than ever looking for alternative suppliers with green credentials. Indeed, clean energy suppliers have rapidly expanded in recent years and now account for around 17% of the market, up from less than 1% in 2011, as individuals become increasingly conscious of their carbon footprint.
Switching to these suppliers could have financial benefits, too, with those who switch to green energy able to save an average of £250 a year. Competition is clearly booming in this sector of the market, driven by technological advances and funding from the Government, and consumers are able to tap into that to make great savings and help the environment at the same time.
This is worlds away from how green energy used to be viewed. At one time, green tariffs were outdated and more expensive, and less popular as a result, yet these days green energy means cheaper energy, so it's a win-win for everyone concerned. It isn't difficult to switch, either – all it could take is a quick search on a price comparison site to see the options available, and you can take it from there.
"It only takes a few minutes to switch and save to the sort of green tariff that can make a positive impact on both your wallet, and the environment," said Victoria Arrington, spokesperson for energyhelpline. "It's never been more affordable to go green, which nowadays could actually save you money compared to a typical Standard Variable Tariff."
It's never been easier to make the switch to green energy, and it could be great for your wallet as well as your conscience. As an added bonus, many of these smaller suppliers outrank the big players in terms of customer service, so you're benefitting on every level! See if you could save money and help the environment at the same time by comparing energy tariffs using our search tool, and see if it's time to go green.
