Over half of all motorists in the UK have been victims of some form of road rage over the last year, a study has revealed.
According to Sainsbury's Car Insurance, five per cent have actually been threatened with physical violence during such incidents.
In addition, 265,000 people are estimated to have had their vehicle forcibly taken while they were in it, with a further 262,000 suffering failed car-jacking attempts.
The firm noted that many car insurance policies do not provide for road rage, highlighting its own package of support for victims.
Manager at Sainsbury's Car Insurance Joanne Mallon remarked: "A worrying number of motorists have unfortunately suffered from road rage or car jacking and the result can be both mentally and physically scarring for the victims."
Last week, the Institute of Advanced Motorists welcomed Department for Transport plans to issue drivers who do not insure their vehicles with automatic fines.
