ERNIE has created two new Premium Bonds millionaires as February begins, but they are not the only ones smiling.

The £1 million winners this month comes from Leeds and Essex. Bond number 193NH145072 was drawn first. The Yorkshire winner holds £20,002 in Premium Bonds and purchased the winning Bond in June 2012, becoming the fourth Premium Bonds millionaire from Leeds.

446WL848124 was the second number drawn, belonging to an Essex winner with £50,000 in Bonds, having bought the winning number last March. Essex now has its 18th Premium Bonds millionaire.

3.3 million other prizes

There is no guaranteed return on money deposited into Premium Bonds. Instead, bond holders are automatically entered into a monthly draw in which they have a chance of winning a tax-free cash prize ranging from £1 million to £25.

More than 3.3 million other prizes were won this month, with six £100,000 winners. These prizes are worth between £25 and £100,000. A total of 3,363,088 prizes worth £96,688,825 will be paid from 116,026,566,248 eligible numbers. Since the first draw in June 1957, 552 million prizes with a total value of £22.6 billion have been claimed.

The number of bond numbers held by a saver depends on the amount of money they have in premium bonds – the more money held the higher the chance of winning a prize. The maximum that can be held is £50,000 and often those holding the maximum, or close to it, appear to win the top prize, as we can see above.

Jill Waters, NS&I Retail Director, said: “ERNIE has brightened up 2022 with a truly life changing sum of money. It’s not too late to start a savings habit for 2022, as people can invest in Premium Bonds from just £25. They can do this via bank transfer or set up a regular standing order to help them fall in love with savings this Valentine’s Day.”

Are you a winner?

Premium Bonds holders can find out if they have won a prize in February’s prize draw, by using the nsandi.com prize checker, official prize checker app or their Alexa-enabled device from Wednesday 2 February 2022. Customers will need their Premium Bonds holder’s number to use the website and their NS&I number or holder’s number to check via the prize checker app. They can also check for any unclaimed prizes owed to them.
